How to choose the best rug?

For a living room feel to be pulled together most interior designers will tell you it needs a rug. But rugs can be expensive (think of it as an investment) but with such a big proportion of your interiors depending on this one piece it can be often daunting. The right rug may be in your home for years, even decades but getting it wrong can be all too easy. Given the range of colours, materials, patterns and pile heights it is easy to ver of course. We are here to help with some easy tips.

One or Many?

There is no rule that says you have to limit yourself to one rug. Some designers use multiple rugs in larger rooms to define different places. But how do you know which is the best for you? Smaller rooms usually benefit by one rug due to the enclosed walls and doorways.

Can’t decide on a rug? Then layer up!

This is my favoured option as I can never pick just one rug. Layer rugs on top of each other; with a plain large rug at the bottom that usually covers most of the floor. Make sure there is a running theme and colour throughout. Try not to layer them up “just because”

Size Matters

Our top tip here is to walk around taking in your room obstructions when thinking about purchasing a rug. Choose a rug that completely covers the walkway or leaves an exposed path for people to walk on. Next decide how far the rug is going to extend over the furniture, the easiest way to work this out is to ensure it extends over all 4 feet of furniture. Or you can use smaller rugs that are for just under furniture (this is when layering comes into play)

Plain or Pattern

Patterned rugs can be intimidating to make such bold statements on your floor.  But depending on whether you want to go for a graphic print or not is simply your own preference; but make sure it goes with the overall vision of your home.

If you decided to go for a patterned rug, there is a range of different styles from contemporary graphic to traditional rugs. But if you do decide to keep it simple there are plenty of other ways to add patterns to your room via cushions and throws.
